About Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal uses advanced laser technology to reduce unwanted hair growth around the body. It relies on a process called selective photothermolysis, which emits specific wavelengths of light to target the melanin (pigment cells) found in your hair. The hair absorbs this light as heat, which damages the ability of your hair to grow. However, this treatment is only effective during the anagen phase, or growth phase, of the hair cycle, as this is when the hair matrix is the most sensitive. (1)
About Splendor X
At Skin & Vein Center, we use Splendor X to perform laser hair removal. This laser system combines two different wavelengths of light to increase treatment efficiency. It is the only FDA-cleared system that emits both 755nm and 1064nm wavelengths, and our laser technicians can adjust the settings to tailor the treatment according to your skin type, skin tone, and hair type. Benefits
Laser hair removal offers several benefits, such as:
- Quick Treatment Sessions: Our laser hair technicians can perform each treatment in approximately an hour.
- Fewer Ingrowns: Unlike shaving, waxing, or plucking, laser hair removal does not leave ingrown hairs, razor bumps, or other forms of irritation.
- Cost-Effective: Laser hair removal eliminates your need to constantly buy new razors, shaving gels, and post-shaving products.
- No Downtime: You can return to your routine as soon as your appointment has concluded (with a few restrictions).
- Lasting Results: The results of laser hair removal last substantially longer than those of traditional hair removal, with many patients enjoying the effects of their treatment for several months on end.
- Wide Application: Laser hair removal can remove hair from most areas of the body, such as the legs, chest, arms, face, and bikini line.
- Personalized Treatment Plan: Our team of laser hair technicians personalizes each treatment plan according to your skin type, skin tone, and hair type to ensure efficacy.
- Elevated Confidence: Many patients report that smoother skin and less unwanted hair improves self-esteem and body positivity.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for laser hair removal if you have been struggling with unwanted hair growth around various regions of your body and frequently face ingrown hairs, skin irritation, or razor bumps after traditional hair removal methods. This treatment works best on those with thick, dark hair and lighter skin tones, as it targets the pigment within the hair follicles.
To undergo laser hair removal, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding what this treatment can achieve. While most patients will make suitable candidates for this treatment, our laser technicians may suggest an alternative treatment if you are pregnant, taking acne medications, primarily have white or grey hair, or are prone to developing cold sores. During your consultation, our team of technicians will assess your candidacy to determine if laser hair removal is right for you.
Personal Consultation
We tailor each laser hair removal treatment according to your skin type, skin tone, and hair type, which is why we ask that you attend a personal consultation to plan treatment. During your consultation, your laser hair technician will meet with you one-on-one to assess your medical history, learn more about your motivations, and discuss your goals. Your technician will additionally perform a physical examination to assess the areas concerning you most. They will then use this information to create a customized treatment plan, including calibrating the laser to the correct settings for your case.

Preparation
Once you have decided to schedule your first treatment session, your laser technician will provide you with a set of detailed preparation instructions. These may include:
- Avoiding Plucking or Waxing: Refrain from plucking or waxing any hair in your targeted treatment area, as these hair removal methods may affect your hair follicles.
- Minimizing Sun Exposure: Avoid any direct or excessive sun exposure, as well as the use of tanning products, as they can negatively affect your results.
- Altering Your Skin Care: Discontinue using any skincare products that may affect your skin’s natural barrier function.
- Shaving the Treatment Area: On the day of, or the day before, your procedure, shave the treatment area using a brand new razor. Using a new razor will minimize the risk of exposing the treatment area to bacteria.
- Arriving Prepared: Arrive at your appointment wearing loose clothing, and ensure you have cleansed your skin. This means there should be no skincare products, body lotions, or fragrances in the targeted areas.
Procedure
On the day of your procedure, you will be invited into a private room to begin your treatment. The laser technician will cleanse your skin before applying a topical numbing cream to help you remain comfortable. They will then adjust the setting of the laser according to your skin type and tone, as well as your hair type.
Your laser technician will then use the Splendor X handpiece and pass it over the treatment area to emit the light energy. As it moves over your skin, the melanin in your hair will absorb it as heat energy. The heat will then destroy the hair follicle and shaft from within. (3) Throughout the treatment, the Splendor X machine will blow cold air over the laser treatment area to cool the skin, remove heat from the tissues surrounding the hair, minimize any discomfort, and prevent burns. After your laser technician has addressed the entire target area, they will thoroughly cleanse it. You will then be free to leave the office.
Recovery
After your treatment, you will be free to return to your routine as normal. You may experience some swelling or redness in the treatment area, but this will quickly subside after approximately 24 hours. Your specialist may also give you a personalized skincare regimen to follow, depending on your skin type.
If any questions or concerns arise during your recovery, we ask that you call our office directly so our team can provide you with any necessary guidance.
Results
The results of your laser hair removal will vary, but you can expect a significant reduction in hair growth, as well as smoother, clearer, and brighter skin in the targeted areas.
The results of your treatment will be long-lasting, as the laser technology damages the follicle of the hair, but they are not completely permanent. You may need to undergo several treatment sessions to ensure even results, as laser hair removal is only effective on hairs that are actively in the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle.
