If you are suffering from plaque psoriasisvitiligo, or atopic dermatitis, there is now a new, clear solution: XTRAC®.

What is XTRAC®?

XTRAC® is a FDA-cleared laser therapy that works to clear up mild to moderate psoriasis plaques faster than sunlight or artificial UV light therapies. It is effective for those with mild to moderate psoriasis, including those who have found that topical or systemic medications have been ineffective.

XTRAC® laser therapy was developed by PhotoMedex, and works through penetrating the skin to break up cells causing the plaque associated with psoriasis. The laser uses a concentrated single band of ultraviolet B (UVB) light to actually break the DNA of T cells which have multiplied to cause psoriasis.

XTRAC® is a concentrated light source, so it will only affect the plaque area, while leaving the surrounding skin untouched. This concentrated light source makes this treatment effective on hard to treat areas such as elbows, knees, and scalp.

Traditional UVB light therapy generally treats the entire body, takes more treatments, and requires a longer period of time to get the same clearance results of XTRAC®.

How Long Does the Treatment Take?

The number of treatments required depend on a patient’s skin type and the severity and thickness of the psoriasis lesions. Generally, it will take approximately 10 treatments to see full results. Each treatment usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes and is relatively pain free.

One study concerning XTRAC® indicated that some 72 percent of study participants saw a minimum of 75 percent clearing within an average of 6.2 treatments. Nearly 50 percent saw a 90 percent clearing after 10 or fewer treatments.

Another added benefit of the XTRAC® therapy is that it can be combined with other treatments such as systemic and topical medications for quicker results and longer remission times.
