MiraDry is a non-invasive FDA-cleared procedure that can help patients accustomed to sweating profusely. By eliminating a small number of the body’s overactive sweat glands, this treatment corrects hyperhidrosis and reduces the magnitude of sweat.
Excessive sweating can have a negative impact on our everyday lives. It can create embarrassing social situations. Often, those suffering from overactive sweat glands find themselves bathing more often, wearing clothing that covers the excessive sweating, and feeling self-conscious in many situations.
Hyperhidrosis can either be an acquired or congenital condition. Focal hyperhidrosis usually presents during adolescence and is considered a genetic or inherited condition. Secondary hyperhidrosis can start at any point and can be a result of medical conditions or disorders.
Excessive sweating can be generalized (affecting the entire body) or localized. Localized excessive sweating is called primary focal hyperhidrosis and usually affects areas such as the feet and armpits.
The miraDry procedure is used to treat localized hyperhidrosis in the underarm area. It is an effective procedure that is an alternative to the more invasive process of removing sweat glands.
Prior to the actual treatment, the underarm area to be treated will be numbed. The doctor will then hold a hand piece to the area, which then delivers electromagnetic energy. The heat produced by the device essentially heats and eliminates the overactive sweat glands. The entire procedure usually takes approximately one hour.
After the procedure, an immediate reduction of sweat will be experienced. There is a possibility of some soreness or swelling, which can be easily alleviated with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. While there is little to no downtime, it is advised that exercise be avoided for several days following the treatment.
Many people are concerned about the elimination of sweat glands. While it is true that sweat glands cool the body, the body has about four million sweat glands, with only two percent of them in the underarm region. Eliminating the glands under the arms will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself.
Many people try other options such as antiperspirants and other treatments such as Botox, these are only temporary procedures. Surgery for removing the sweat glands poses inherent risks. miraDry, on the other hand, provides great results, easily and effectively.
