What is Alopecia and What Can You Do to Fix It?

Baldness

Many people may be concerned about thinning hair, or even hair loss. Hair loss is called alopecia and there are many reasons that can cause the hair loss.

Causes of Alopecia

Many researchers claim that genetics are to blame; however, there are a number of other factors that can cause hair loss. Some may be genetics based, while other may be causing hair loss through medications and other conditions.

Androgenetic Alopecia is considered the most common kind of hair loss for both men and women and is an inherited trait. It is caused by the over-activity of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which causes shortened follicle growth. This is also known as the DHT or dihydrotestosterone theory.

Other types of alopecia and causes include:

Alopecia Areata is a condition resulting in hair loss that causes small, smooth round patches. The cause of this type of hair loss is not know and can affect people of any age

Alopecia Areata Childbirth – Some women may experience hair loss after giving birth; however, this hair loss usually only lasts a few months.

An over- or under-active thyroid may result in hair loss, which can be reversed with proper treatment.

Inadequate Dietary Protein resulting in hair loss can be reversed by consuming adequate amounts of protein.

Treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation for cancer can cause hair loss; however, the hair will regrow after the treatment ends.

Temporary hair loss can occur through the use of some prescription medications. People taking high doses of Vitamin A may experience hair loss as well.

Birth control pills — Some women have experienced hair loss while taking oral contraception; however, this condition usually only lasts about six months.

Additional causes of hair loss or thinning include:

  • Stress or Exhaustion
  • Low Iron Levels
  • Chronic Illness
  • Infections affecting the scalp, such as ringworm
