Getting Rid of a Double Chin

Double chins affect men and women of all ages, even those who are careful with their diets and consistent with their exercise. For some, a double chin develops because of genetics, where fatty deposits congregate to a small pocket beneath their chin. For others, a double chin is the result of a sedentary lifestyle, with little exercise and extra weight overall. For others still, a double chin is becoming more apparent with age, as the collagen in their skin and the tone of their muscles has led to a drooping, sagging jaw, where fat has settled and weighs the skin down.

Regardless of the reason, a double chin is rarely seen as a desirable attribute and most people who have one wish they didn’t. Getting rid of a double chin isn’t impossible however. There are options in exercise and cosmetic assistance that can help to banish your double chin for good.

Exercise First

Sometimes a double chin is the result of weak muscles and a lack of tone. There are muscles surrounding the jaw line, and in a modern age where many people spend their days looking down at a Smartphone or a laptop, their chin is in a constant state of drooping. Daily exercises that stretch the chin and neck can help to firm up the area beneath the chin. Try pointing your chin upward and jutting out your lower jaw and holding it for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times. Exercises such as kissing the air with your jaw pointed upward toward the sky can help as well.

Cosmetic Options

But can be done when exercise isn’t enough? Sometimes some cosmetic intervention is necessary to really get rid of stubborn fat settled beneath the chin. A new cosmetic procedure called “Kybella” is offered by cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists, and is minimally invasive and much easier to undergo than liposuction or surgery. Kybella, a formula made up of deoxycholic acid, is carefully injected into the skin just beneath the chin, where it begins to destroy and absorb fat cells. The full procedure usually takes about 20 minutes per session, with most patients requiring 2-3 sessions spaced a couple weeks apart to see full results.
