Common Skin Disorders & Treatments

Our skin is susceptible to a number of skin conditions and diseases which can affect the health and well-being of men and women of all ages. Some skin conditions are more common than others, and some are more serious and require immediate treatment from a professional dermatologist. Let’s look at some of the most common skin disorders and their appropriate treatment methods.

Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, with most people experiencing some degree of acne at some point in their lives, particularly during adolescence. Acne is characterized by blackheads and white heads and often begins at puberty, with some spots appearing on the face, the back, and/or on the chest. Acne can persist into adulthood and is caused by a hormonal imbalance, an excess of oil production, or dead skin cells not shedding properly. There are some very effective topical treatments available on the market that your dermatologist can prescribe.

Eczema

This inflammatory condition affects the uppermost layer of skin and causes redness, oozing, crusting, scaling, blistering, thickening of the skin, and sometimes a pigmentation change. This condition affects both men and women equally and usually starts in the first weeks to first couple months of life. It’s uncertain what causes eczema and severity levels vary from person to person. Heat and dust, illness, a bacterial infection, dry skin, or even stress can cause eczema to flare up. There is no cure for eczema, but there are many ways of controlling it with the help of your doctor.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

This condition is a type of skin cancer, and skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States and continues to be on the rise. There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Basal Cell Carcinoma is a non-melanoma skin cancer and is the most common type. This condition is most often caused by too much exposure to UV light from the sun or from tanning beds. People with freckles, pale skin, and/or blonde or red hair are more susceptible to developing BCC. This condition can be cured in nearly every case, although treatment may become complicated if it’s been neglected for a long time or the BCC is located in a harder to reach place such as near the eye, ear, or nose.
