3 Ways to Make Sure Your Skin Is Protected This Summer

Summer is here—that long awaited season when you can let loose, kick back, and soak it all in. Soaking it all in when it comes to sun exposure may be something you want to be cautious with, however, not only during the summer months but all year round. Melanoma skin cancer, frequently caused by over exposure to harmful UV rays, remains one the deadliest forms of skin cancer and affects the young as well as the old. So how can you be sure you’re playing it safe while still having fun this summer? Here are 3 main ways to keep your skin well protected during the summer season.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

You’ve heard it a thousand times and it only bears repeating: Wearing sunscreen is absolutely crucial in protecting your skin and in avoiding significant damage. Even during cloudy days or cooler days, the sun’s rays can still harm your skin. Even if you think you’ll only be outside for a bit, wearing sunscreen should become a daily habit. Exposed areas of your skin should be covered in sunscreen when you’re outdoors. If you’re planning on spending time in the water, make sure you pick a sunscreen that is waterproof and apply it ahead of time.

Invest in the Proper Clothing

Modern UV protective clothing can help protect against damaging UV rays. You may want to buy a couple UV protective lightweight, long sleeve shirts for wearing during days at the beach or lake. It’s also a smart idea to buy a good hat that not only protects the top of your head, but has a brim for covering your face and also the back of your neck. There are many styles and options available.

Avoid Peak Times

The peak sun intensity hours are when UV light rays are at their very strongest, which means it’s probably a good idea to avoid spending a long time outdoors during this time. Between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm are considered “peak times.” Where at all possible, schedule fun outdoor activities either in the early morning hours or later in the afternoon and early evening to avoid the strongest UV exposure potential.

Not only is protecting your skin important, it’s also important to make and keep regular dermatologist appointments to catch any potentially dangerous skin growths and conditions. Contact us to schedule an appointment for the health of your skin today!
