For the treatment of frown lines, crow's feet and wrinkles around the eyes.
Wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines tend to be. While you may have earned every one of your worry lines, you don't have to show them anymore. The procedure known as cosmetic denervation uses Botox injections to improve the appearance of worry lines, frown lines, crow's feet and other facial wrinkles.
HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. The Botox takes effect in three to seven days. Gradually over three to six months the Botox effect will fade, and the muscle action will return. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result.
ARE BOTOX TREATMENTS SAFE?
Botox injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many ophthalmological and neurological disorders. Each year thousands of patients receive Botox treatments for a variety of conditions and it is quickly becoming a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?
Cosmetic denervation with Botox is a simple and safe procedure. Using a tiny micro needle, a very small amount of Botox is injected, very precisely, into several locations on the face. Because the needle is so small and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injections is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to office. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be covered with make-up.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases, the toxin can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effects depends on the muscles injected. This will be discussed with you by one of our injectors before your treatment. Because the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only a few weeks.
HOW HAS BOTOX BEEN TESTED?
Botox is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large amounts, this toxin blocks the nerve impulses to muscles, causing a form of paralysis. By using extremely small doses of Botox, injected directly into a specific muscle, only the action of that muscle will be paralyzed. For example, the frown line between the eyebrows is caused by the action of a muscle called the corrugators. Once the muscle is paralyzed, it cannot contract, and the frown line gradually fades away. Botox has been used since 1980 for the treatment of strabismus (lazy eye), and blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye blinking). The use of Botox for forehead wrinkles was pioneered in 1989 by Dr. Carruthers an Ophthalmologist of Vancouver. A major study of this technique was completed in 1995.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
If wrinkles make you look older than you are, then cosmetic denervation can smooth these out and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. However, this procedure cannot improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. Botox injections will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a facelift or brow lift.
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF BOTOX INJECTIONS?
Unfortunately, Botox injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of wrinkles. The effects of the injections last from three to six months. You will need to have injections about two to three times a year. The early clinical studies indicate that the duration of treatment benefits is increased over time so that you should require injections less frequently in future. Also, the duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective in those over 65 years of age.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF I AM A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX?
If you would like to learn more about your cosmetic options or find out if Botox treatments might work well for you, please call our office and schedule a consultation. If you need more information, please contact us.
IS BOTOX USED TO TREAT OTHER SYMPTOMS?
Yes. We use Botox to treat hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms and underarms) as well as migraine headaches.
The skin is the largest organ in our body. It is made up of millions of cells that protect us from the environment and regulate our body temperature. Every day thousands of cells die, flake off and are replaced by new cells from beneath the skin. As we age, this process begins to slow down. Our skin may become dull. Dark blotches, fine lines and other signs of sun-damage and aging begin to appear.
Chemical Peel Skin Rejuvenation
Chemical Peels have been used for over 100 years to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells. Each year thousands of chemical peels are performed in the United States. Chemical peels use a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. It tightens the skin, reduces wrinkling and restores a more youthful appearance.
What skin conditions can a chemical peel improve?
Chemical peels can effectively improve a wide variety of skin conditions including:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Uneven pigmentation
• Shallow acne scars
• Sun-damaged skin
• Age spots
• Freckling
A chemical peel is not a substitute for a facelift. It can not eliminate excessive or lax skin. But, in many cases a chemical peel is performed in conjunction with these procedures.
What should you expect after treatment?
Reactions to chemical peels are similar to a sunburn and range from mild to more pronounced. Generally, the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery.
A light peel usually results in some redness, and possibly some scaling for a few days. Medium and deep peels can result in swelling and blisters that break open forming a crust and turning brown, followed by peeling which can last up to two weeks. These peels may require dressings on some or all of the treated skin. Dressings are usually removed after a day or two. Ointments and creams will be applied to keep the skin moist. At first the new skin will have the color of a significant sunburn. This will gradually fade to pink over the next several weeks. Cosmetics can be applied after about two weeks. Following a chemical peel, your new skin will be tighter, smoother and may be slightly lighter than it was before surgery.
Following any skin peel, it is important that you avoid any exposure to the sun. Your new skin is very sensitive and susceptible to injury. Always apply a wide spectrum (UVA and UVB blocking) sun block of at least SPF 15 twenty minutes before you go outside. Our doctors will prescribe a proper home skin-care treatment program to ensure proper healing. We will also educate you on the proper home treatment to maintain your results after you are completely healed.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and pulled up your cheeks or the skin above your eyebrows to a higher position and wished it would stay there? Now there is a simple new technique that makes it possible.
Introducing a new era in minimally invasive rejuvenation techniques - Contour Threads™ the only FDA approved non-absorbable barbed sutures cleared for lifting sagging contours of the brow and midface areas.
The Beauty of Contour Threads™
As the aging process begins, the connective tissue thins and collagen and elastic fibers break down. These changes in the support structures appear as sagging, deep creases, folds and wrinkles that can appear in your thirties.
A procedure with patented Contour Threads™ is a safe, conservative and effective one that offers subtle, natural- looking results. These specially designed sutures are fashioned from clear polypropylene, a material that has been safely used in the body for many years in other medical products. By gently shifting sagging tissues in an upward direction, this technique allows the surgeon to produce a relaxed, fresh appearance while preserving and enhancing the natural contours of your face. This procedure does not replace a conventional facelift; rather it offers patients an innovative, minimally invasive approach.
A consultation with a cosmetic surgeon who has been fully trained in this procedure is the first step. To ensure a high level of safety and accuracy, all physicians must complete a training course on the surgical technique before using Contour Threads™.
In general, the best candidates for this procedure include both women and men in their thirties through their sixties who want a more youthful appearance, but do not want a conventional full facelift or browlift procedure.
Possible indications may include:
What areas can be treated?
Contour Threads™ are used for:
What are "barbed" sutures?
Unlike conventional sutures which are smooth, Contour Threads™ have tiny barbs or cogs, that are spaced evenly apart. Once inserted under the skin, they are fixated in an umbrella-like fashion and with tension creates suspension that gently lifts sagging tissues of the brow and face.
How do they work?
Due to the unique design of the cogs of Contour Threads™, the surrounding tissues act to hold the threads in place without the need for visible scars. For the midface procedure, the surgeon makes a tiny incision close to the ear and the threads are advanced along the previously marked contours toward the chin and jaw line so they create a firm hold on the underlying tissues without causing additional trauma. The cogs do the work of holding, by being fixated to tissue as they are softly contoured into place.
Once in position, your body generates new collagen bundles that surround each thread to maintain the lifting effect. The exact placement of the threads will vary from patient to patient. Unlike other thread products, Contour Threads™ are clear in color so they are not visible under fair or thin skin.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure is quick and usually performed under local anesthesia. The actual length of time will depend on the number of threads used. A typical procedure usually takes about 60 minutes to perform.
How long is the recovery?
In most cases, there is minimal discomfort, bruising and swelling. Ice compresses are recommended for the first 24-48 hours. Patients can usually return to work or normal activities in a few days to one week.
How many treatments will I need?
Usually only one procedure is needed to achieve the desired lifting effect.
How long do the results last?
Duration varies depending on the age of the patient at the time of the procedure, the degree of sagging, and the number of threads used. Additional threads may be added as needed.
What are the possible side effects?
The Contour Threads™ procedure is a simple procedure to perform. Complications are rare and will be less likely with an experienced surgeon. Since this technique is entirely reversible, unwanted effects are usually easily corrected under local anesthesia.
Can this procedure be combined with other cosmetic procedures?
This is a stand-alone procedure. It is not uncommon to have this procedure combined with botulinum toxin to reduce facial muscle activity, dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid or fat to enhance volume, or peels and laser therapy to improve skin texture. Liposuction of the neck is one of the other procedures that can be done in conjunction with a Contour Threads™ procedure.
Will I still be able to have a conventional / traditional facelift or a browlift at another time?
Absolutely.Developed by a board certified plastic surgeon; the unique design of Contour Threads™ allows a traditional facelift or browlift procedure when you are ready.
Earlobe Repair and Reduction
Either through earlobe repair or reduction we can change what age, genetics or those long heavy dangling earrings have done to your ears. Earlobes are often lengthened and damaged over time and aesthetic earlobe reshaping can help you achieve a more youthful appearance.
It is believed that we have our fully developed ear size very early in our lives; therefore genetics play a large role in how our ear is shaped and sized. The most common cause of our ear disorder is the trauma we ourselves cause to them. And lastly, as we age our ears lengthen with gravity pulling in a downward position. Our goal is to restore that form and function to your earlobe; to alter the shape for a more aesthetically desired look.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Seiger will discuss the changes that you would like for your particular problem. You should discuss in detail your concerns so the appropriate aesthetic results can be performed. Prior to your procedure, a complete health history will be performed and specific instructions will be given to assist you in preparation for your procedure.
Earlobe surgery, for the most part has no risk involved. Complications are infrequent, however, as with any surgical procedure there are certain potential risks and complications that will be reviewed with you prior to your surgical procedure. The appropriate technique will depend on the nature of the specific problem to correct. Earlobe surgery will take 30-90 minutes to complete and is done using local anesthesia and a relaxing sedative. Earlobe surgery is often used in conjunction with other facial surgery techniques such as our One Hour Facelift.
Earlobe Repair
This is a simple, common, cosmetic procedure of torn earlobes. The procedure is done with local anesthesia and takes approximately 30 minutes to perform. Elongated slits and often complete split lobes are repaired. A special incision is made to repair the torn lobe and sutures are placed and remain intact for 5-7 days. The surgical site must be allowed to heal for approximately eight weeks before repiercing can be completed. After the healing, very minimal scarring remains allowing for an aesthetically pleasing end result.
Earlobe Reduction
This is a procedure designed to remove excess skin and tissue from a small incision that blends into the ears natural creases. The procedure is done with local anesthesia and takes approximately 60 minutes to perform. Dr. Seiger will remove the skin and suture the lobe area leaving only a faint scar in the back of the earlobe allowing for the aesthetic reshaping and ear rejuvenation. The technique used will depend on your ears current shape and the result you wish to achieve.
Earlobe Wrinkling
This condition can be corrected by above procedures and also by laser treatment. This will aide in restoring smooth and youthful texture to the earlobe.
Recovery after Earlobe Rejuvenation
With earlobe rejuvenation you may be placed in a head dressing for compression. You will be given specific instructions for your individual care and suture removal. You will be up and around within a few hours and can resume your activities of daily living. You will complete your prescribed antibiotic and a mild pain medication will be prescribed. Your ear will be somewhat sore. With realistic expectations, you can expect your ear surgery to produce pleasing aesthetic results.
The ENDOTINE, also known as a brow lift or "Power lift", is a surgical cosmetic procedure to remove wrinkles and folds from the forehead. This offers a novel and effective solution for fixation of the scalp tissue, completing the endoscopic forehead lift procedure. The ENDOTINE features sutureless MultiPoint Technology (MPT), a breakthrough platform technology designed to facilitate minimally invasive procedures, reduced operating time and improve surgical outcome.
The device's unique design provides multiple points of contact with the suspended tissue, distributing tension to maximize fixation strength.
The design is:
• FAST - The ENDOTINE allows fixation times approaching less than one minute ner side.
• ADJUSTABLE - The ENDOTINE design allows simple readjustment of the tissue for greater aesthetic control of the brow height and shape.
• SECURE - The ENDOTINE's robust construction and multiple tine design secure strength throughout the crucial, early healing period.
The ENDOTINE is a patented bioabsorbable fixation device with tine elevation. There are multiple tines for high structural integrity and balanced distribution of tension. The implant ideally lies under hair bearing scalp at the conclusion of the procedure.
The procedure is not time consuming and requires only the following steps:
• A bilateral 1-2cm incision is made in the frontal hairline
• The drill site is selected and the insertion site is made
• The ENDOTINE is implanted
• The brow tissue is elevated to the desired position
• The incision is sutured closed
The patient will be given specific post-operative and icing instructions.
Sometimes, even after a great night's sleep, it can be hard to feel alive and vibrant when you see tired, drooping eyes looking back at you from the mirror. The loose skin over your eyes and the fat pads under your eyes make you look more tired and older than you feel inside. Initially, the bags are noticeable only upon awakening in the morning. As the problem becomes more severe, this puffy look persists throughout the day. This tendency may be inherited and may appear very early in life, even in the teens and 20's - before the aging process even becomes obvious.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Each year thousands of women and men choose eyelid surgery to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes, and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a facelift, a brow lift or laser skin resurfacing.
During your initial cosmetic consultation, we will discuss your particular condition, your expectations, and the probable outcome of treatment. You may be shown several before and after treatment photographs of patients having similar conditions, and you will receive an explanation of your treatment. Before and after photos may be taken of the area to be treated to document your results.
What about recovery?
When the procedure is performed alone, and not with a facelift, it is generally done under local anesthesia. The eye area is bruised and swollen for about two weeks. Patients should keep their heads up and place cold compresses on their eyes periodically. Antibiotic eye drops are generally prescribed for several days. Patients can't wear contact lenses for about two weeks, since the eyelids may be stiff and sore. Make-up may be worn after about ten days. The resulting hairline scars, which follow the natural contour of the eyelids, tend to fade in about two months. After cosmetic surgery, our patients have a softer, more youthful look to their faces. Many seem to have a new spring in their step after facing their fresher reflections in the mirror.
The procedure Blepharoplasty can be performed in your doctor's office, an outpatient surgical facility or a hospital. It is generally performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Seiger places fine incisions in the crease above each eye to correct problems of the upper eyelids. Then a thin crescent of excess skin and muscle is removed. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures. To remove the fatty deposits beneath the eyes, the incisions are placed just inside the lower eyelid. After the fat is removed, the incisions may be closed with absorbable sutures or may be left to heal naturally. When excess skin and muscle needs to be removed from the lower lids, the incisions are placed in the natural smile crease below the lash line. The procedure can take between one and two hours, depending of the extent of the surgery.
What about insurance?
Eyelid problems are common, even in younger people. Correcting eyelid problems that interfere with your vision may be covered by your health insurance after medical necessity is completed. However, when eyelid surgery is performed for cosmetic reasons, it will not be covered.

What does hair restoration or transplantation involve?
Hair transplantation involves taking mini (four to seven hairs) or micro (one to three hairs) grafts from the back and sides of the scalp and replacing them into the bald area. What many patients do not realize until speaking with surgeons from Skin & Vein is that the hair from the back and sides of the head is genetically programmed in the root to grow for a lifetime. This means that hair restoration is a permanent form of treatment. Just as important, the donor site from which the transplanted hair was taken will not become bald. Once relocated to the balding area, transplanted hair will retain the same color, texture and growth rate as the area from which it was taken.
Will it look natural?
Smaller grafts are spread out more evenly, thus giving a natural-looking hairline. Surgeons at Skin & Vein closely study each patient's hair topography. By controlling the size of graft, distribution and precise direction of natural hair growth, transplanted hair becomes virtually indistinguishable. This customized approach creates the most aesthetically-pleasing appearance possible.
Am I a candidate for natural hair transplantation?
With advances in technology, options are now available for candidates who were once refused transplantations due to extensive hair loss. Both male and female patients of Skin & Vein regularly experience a renewed sense of confidence and contentment from this healthy, natural solution to baldness. Your surgeon should be aware of any medical condition or disorder, such as: heart disease, anemia or bleeding abnormalities, epilepsy, allergies or drug reactions, nervous or eating disorders, and all medications being taken.
How many sessions will be necessary and when can I expect to see results?
This varies with each patient, depending on the extensiveness of hair loss. One hundred to 800 grafts of various sizes can be transplanted at each session, which takes up to three hours to complete. During your initial consultation, a surgeon from Skin & Vein will estimate the anticipated number of sessions.
How long does it take for the transplanted hair to grow?
Transplanted hair needs time to "rest" after surgery. It will usually shed after four weeks with new growth appearing approximately 12 weeks later at a rate of 1/4 inch per month. If more than one session is required, we typically schedule patients to come back for their second session in three months.
How long will the procedure last?
Unlike topical treatments in which the user must apply the treatment on an ongoing basis for hair growth to continue, transplanted hair lasts a lifetime.
Is the procedure painful?
Hair transplantation is relatively painless. Using a local anesthetic, the procedure is performed by skilled surgeons at Skin & Vein in the comfort of our office. Patients remain fully alert throughout the surgery and can usually return to work within 24 hours. Mild discomfort may occur after the procedure when the anesthesia wears off. This is easily remedied with a mild analgesic.
Is there any risk involved?
With any surgical procedure, there is some risk involved. Fortunately, complications are rare and can usually be avoided with adherence to the pre-operative instructions and a thorough medical review of all patients. Some of the complications that may occur, but are rare, include:
• Bleeding - which is easily controlled by pressure
• Infection and Swelling - which are medication controlled
• Temporary Numbness - which will resolve typically within three to six months.
There is generally a 95 percent graft survival rate.
Laser Hair Removal for Men & Women
For many men and women, unwanted hair can be a nightmare. Getting rid of it can be painful. Until now the only options for removing unwanted hair were smelly hair removal creams, sharp razors, stinging wax or painful electrolysis needles. An advanced approach to beautiful skin provides the ultimate solution. Now, men and women alike will be pleased with the results made possible by the Laser Hair Removal process.
What is the Laser Hair Removal process?
Laser Hair Removal uses a low-energy laser to gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to routine shaving and waxing. This advanced technology transcends the older, painful hair removal treatments to deliver long-lasting results. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Laser treatments leave your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier. Best of all, Laser Hair Removal treatments are a safe, fast, gentle, and effective alternative method for hair removal.
What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal?
• Larger areas may be treated using lasers than with electrolysis, waxing or tweezing.
• It combines the speed of shaving with the lasting results promised by electrolysis.
• Laser Hair Removal is effective on almost any area of the body where smoother, younger, hair-free skin is desired.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hair’s location, thickness and resilience.
The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results. Treatment results will vary from patient to patient depending on skin and hair color.
Note: Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker or quicker. The opposite is usually the case. The laser may cause hair to come back slower and thinner.
How is Laser Hair Removal different from electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a much slower process. With electrolysis a needle is actually inserted into each hair follicle, one at a time. Once inserted, an electric shock burns the follicle to retard hair growth. Laser Hair Removal uses the cool light of the laser to scan the treatment area and within minutes all of the hairs in the laser’s beam are treated. Most patients who have had both procedures say that Laser Hair Removal is less painful, faster and more convenient.
What are the laser treatments like?
Laser Hair Removal is a gentle three-step process. First, your technician gently cleanses the area to be treated. Next, your technician shaves the area. Then the area is scanned with the laser. The laser energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. In a fraction of a second, all of the treated hair follicles are disabled. Treatments can last from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the size of the area being treated.
After your treatment, the area is cleansed and you can return to your normal activities immediately. Your physician may recommend that you use a specially formulated skin care product line or prescribe a skin care regime especially formulated for your skin type after laser treatments. The use of sun screen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
To find out if you could be a candidate for one of these procedures or to learn more information about these procedures, contact one of our technicians for a private consultation.
Remember when? As a child, your skin was soft and smooth.
Over the years, the sun, wind, and toxins in the air have taken their toll and your skin is showing signs of aging.
You have been eating better, living healthier, and generally keeping fit. Now, you want the image you see in the mirror to reflect the way you feel inside. For many of us, this means reversing the years of wear and tear on your skin caused by fun in the sun, the environment, and natural aging.
Signs of aging skin
At first, fine lines appear near the eyes, around the lips, the forehead and across the cheeks. Next, the creases deepen near the mouth and between the eyes. Facial skin begins to loosen and sag. All the while environmental assailants such as UV from the sun, toxins in the air, cigarette smoke, stress and poor nutrition accelerate the aging process..
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is an exciting medical procedure which corrects the effects of the sun, wind and time. Physicians around the world use the pinpoint accuracy of advanced CO2 (carbon dioxide) lasers to repair damaged skin. Laser skin resurfacing reduces wrinkles without scalpels or stitches. The laser emits an intense beam of energy that heats and vaporizes tissue instantaneously. It is so precise that the normal surrounding tissue is not effected.
As your doctor guides the laser's beam over the damaged or wrinkled skin, it gently removes the outer layers. Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes are smoothed. Deep creases and frown lines will be softened and acne scars are minimized. Once the outer layer of skin has been removed, the new skin beneath is softer, smoother with a more youthful appearance.
In addition, research has proven that a CO2 Laser Peel actually shrinks the collagen in your skin by up to 30%, providing a tightening and lifting effect. In some cases this may replace a face-lift or other plastic surgery procedures; in others, it can complement surgical procedures.
A new generation of resurfacing lasers is called the Erbium lasers. The Erbium laser provides a gentler, more precise resurfacing. This procedure works well on younger people, on men, on darker pigmented skin, and on more fragile areas of skin like the neck, chest and hands. It is also for any patient wanting a "lighter" peel.
How is the procedure done?
The Laser Peel is an outpatient procedure that lasts between 1 and 1-1/2 hours. It is normally performed with local anesthesia and mild sedation. The procedure itself involves very little pain and there is only mild discomfort, like sunburn following the procedure. You will need a driver to assist you home.
What about recovery?
Though the surface of your skin is usually healed within one week, it will be somewhat sensitive, and taking two to three weeks off assures you will look very natural when you return to your regular routine. However, depending upon each patient, and on the type of treatment, healing times can vary. For deeper peels, your skin can remain pink for up to four months, but is easily covered with make-up. For lighter peels, the pink color can fade in as little as two weeks. The good news is, that your new skin continues to improve through your body's own healing process over six months following the procedure.
Improvements in your healthy new skin will last anywhere from five to ten years ... especially with good home skin care. We design your personal skin care routine that will enhance your results for years.
What are the benefits of laser resurfacing?
• Lasers cause less scarring, bleeding and bruising.
• Lasers provide a level of control that is difficult to achieve with other treatments.
• With lasers your doctor can immediately visualize the effect of the treatment.
• Laser resurfacing is more predictable than other forms of treatment.
• Laser surgery requires shorter recovery time than traditional treatments.
Are you a good candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Your doctor will review your medical history, age, skin type and pigmentation; consider your desired results, and determine if you are a candidate for laser skin resurfacing. Results will vary from patient to patient depending on age, skin type and condition.
Your doctor may discuss with you other skin rejuvenation procedures such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, facelifts, fat transfer or Botox injections.
Our physicians, who have performed hundreds of laser peels, estimate patients can expect at least a 50% improvement and look 5 to 10 years younger.
If you are interested in learning more about laser resurfacing, please call our office and we will be happy to answer your questions.
Are laser treatments safe?
Yes. Lasers have been used in medicine for a wide range of treatments since the early 1960s by many specialties. In the hands of a trained healthcare professional, the use of a laser is safe and effective.
How does the laser work?
A laser generates an intense beam of light. This beam brings energy to a specific site, through a small hand piece connected to the laser.
The laser light is absorbed by oxy hemoglobin (bright red blood cells carrying oxygen) and melanin/pigment (black or brown pigment found in the skin) causing decomposition or destruction by heat of unwanted cells while leaving healthy cells intact.
What is a vascular lesion?
A vascular lesion is formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a red appearance of the skin. Spider veins (telangiectasia), shown below, are the most common vascular lesions.
What is a pigmented lesion?
Melanin is the dark pigment present in skin and is produced by melanocytes. Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment multiplies, it forms freckles, brown age spots and moles. Lentigines, pictured below, are an example of a pigmented lesion.
What should a patient expect during and after treatment?
Treatment may vary, depending upon patient characteristics and the area being treated.
You will be asked to wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the intense beam of laser light.
You will be placed in a reclined position, depending on the location of treatment. The technician will use a pencil thin hand piece to direct a beam of laser light to the lesion. In most cases, anesthesia is not required.
Some patients report feeling a slight stinging sensation during the treatment followed by some redness which usually goes away in 2-4 hours. Some swelling may also be experienced and may last 1-2 days. There will not be any purple skin discoloration or bruised appearance to the treated skin.
Postoperative care is minimal. Your doctor may ask you to use an anti-bacterial ointment on the treated area for a short period of time and will suggest that you stay out of the sun during the healing process.
Final treatment results should be evident within 10-14 days after treatment for vascular lesions and within 2-3 weeks after treatment for pigmented lesions. In the meantime, normal daily activities can be resumed with only a slight redness evident at the treatment area.
What does the laser look and sound like?
The laser is small - about the size of a VCR. As pulses of energy leave the end of the hand piece fiber, you will hear a soft beeping sound.
What conditions are treated with the laser?
Vascular Lesions
• Telangiectasia - facial spider veins caused by a dilation of capillary vessels or arterioles.
• Cherry Angiomas - slightly raised, red lesions
• Spider Angiomas - slightly raised, red spider-like lesions
• Rosacea - red facial lesions around the nose and cheeks causing a sunburn look
Pigmented Lesions
• Lentigines - a flat, brown spot on the skin present on skin with frequent sun exposure
• Keratoses - slightly elevated pigmented spots often found on the back and hands
• Freckles - a brownish spot on the skin common on people with fair skin
• Dermatosis Papulosis Nigra - small, black marks seen primarily on people of Asian or African descent
As a patient, what does the laser mean to me? What are the benefits?
• Excellent and consistent outcome - minimal to no discoloration, swelling or complications
• Friendly and gentle treatment - typically performed without anesthesia or pain

For centuries, a woman's lips have been viewed as a sign of her sensuality. More recently, the film Pretty Woman and its lead actress brought the lips back into the forefront of fashion. Look around. It seems that luscious lips are everywhere.
Luscious lips are a key element of almost every photo in every fashion magazine. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with a pair of naturally beautiful lips. The few who are don't get to keep them without a little help. Over time the sun, the elements, smoking and the aging process take their toll. The corners of the mouth begin to droop. The V-shaped area of the upper lip known as Cupid's Bow begins to flatten out and lose its youthful fullness. Vertical wrinkles or Smoker's Lines begin to appear, causing your lipstick to bleed. That once sensual look is gone or greatly diminished.
Thanks to today's many medical advances there is help. Aging lips can be rejuvenated and less full lips can be enhanced.
What are my treatment options?
Lip enhancement and rejuvenation are two of the most frequently requested cosmetic procedures. Your options range from the latest in laser treatments to natural injectable fillers or synthetic implants. All of these fillers are soft, pliable, and have a natural feel.
Which treatment is best for me?
Your surgeon will select the procedure best for you. Every surgeon will have his or her own procedure preferences for a variety of reasons, including the range in shape of each patient's lips and the results desired.
Injectable lip enhancement
Your injectable options include:
• Radiance
• Captique
• HylaForm
• Restylane
SoftForm(r) and soft "ePTFE"(expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) implants lead the way in synthetic options. SoftForm and soft "ePTFE" implants have proven to provide a safe, predictable, non-allergenic improvement for thin or aging lips.
What is recovery like?
Following lip enhancement with one of the injectable products, your lips remain swollen for a few hours only. You may return to normal activities the same day. Touch-up treatments may be necessary.
When implants are used for lip augmentation, discomfort is minimal. Small stitches may be used to close the implant site. These stitches will be removed in a few days. Some swelling may last up to a week. Elevating your head and applying cold compresses during the first 24 hours will help keep this to a minimum. Postoperative discomfort can be controlled with medication. Chewing food and brushing your teeth may be a little uncomfortable for a few days. There may be some bruising which can be covered with make-up.
Generally, patients experience a slightly longer recovery period after laser lip rejuvenation. Most of the healing occurs during the first one or two weeks. During this time the treated areas must be kept moist. Postoperative discomfort can be controlled with medication. The initial redness fades to a light pink.
If you are wondering if you could benefit from lip enhancement or rejuvenation, call our office to arrange a consultation.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.
What is Restylane made of?
Restylane is the first cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and fully biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
How is Restylane different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acid-based products, Restylane is free from animal proteins. This quality limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Additionally, Restylane has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid available in a dermal filler.
Is Restylane safe?
Yes. Restylane has been used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. There is limited risk of allergic reaction. Restylane is fully biocompatible and allergy testing is not required. After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappear. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you shouldn't use Restylane.
Can Restylane be used anywhere on my face?
Restylane has been used in more than 1.5 million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. In the U.S. the FDA has approved Restylane for wrinkles and folds like the ones from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Your doctor will consult with you prior to your injection regarding common treatment areas.
How long does Restylane last?
Restylane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally last for about six months! Restylane stabilization technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone.
How often should I have Restylane treatments done?
Treatments are typically scheduled two to three times a year. Having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.
What should patients do prior to treatment?
Restylane requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John's Wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your physician. He/She may consider prescribing a medication to minimize recurrence.
How is Restylane different from BOTOX Cosmetic?
Restylane is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox Cosmetic is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products.
How is Restylane different from bovine collagen?
Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cows) and requires an allergy test. Restylane can he administered immediately-no waiting is required.
WHAT IS LIPOSCULPTURE?
Liposculpture, also know as liposuction, is a cosmetic procedure used to remove stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body, including:
• Abdomen
• Hips and thighs
• Chin, neck and cheeks
• Upper arms and above the breasts
• Knees, calves and ankles
While liposculpture is not a substitute for weight reduction, it is an effective method of removing localized fat that doesn't respond to dieting and exercise.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSCULPTURE?
Many individuals think they must be overweight to undergo liposculpture. While we can assist overweight patients attain their goals, this procedure can also benefit people who only have problem areas of fat. Ideal candidates are healthy men and women who are near their ideal body weight, but have pockets of excess fat in certain areas.
Even though liposculpture helps body shape, this surgery does not alter skin texture. Patients with firm skin elasticity will attain the best results, where as those with loose skin will remain so after the procedure.
Just as important, you should have realistic expectations. Carefully consider your expectations and discuss them with us in advance of having the procedure.
LIPOSCULPTURE USING THE TUMESCENT TECHNIQUE OF LOCAL ANESTHESIA
Experienced, skilled physicians at Skin & Vein perform liposculpture under local anesthesia utilizing the revolutionary tumescent technique. This in-office surgery eliminates the risks of general anesthesia. Patients are usually back to work within days and resume all normal activity just one week after surgery.
The tumescent technique enables the doctors to numb large, multiple areas quickly by infusing diluted amounts of local anesthetic. Because the need for several injections is eliminated, tumescent anesthesia reduces the pain experienced. Additionally, there is minimal bleeding with this advanced procedure. Because there are no hospital fees the cost of surgery is significantly reduced.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
With any surgical procedure, there is some risk involved. Fortunately, the potential complications resulting from liposculpture are minimal. In rare instances, one could potentially experience bleeding, fluid accumulation (which would be drained), lumpiness, infection, skin trauma or a reaction to anesthesia.
The scars from liposculpture are small and usually heal without notice. Other cosmetic problems which may occur include rippling of the skin over the treated area. Finally, asymmetry—or uneven shape—sometimes requires a second procedure for touch-up.
HOW LONG IS RECOVERY?
While recovery time varies among patients, the tumescent technique of anesthesia allows for an overall shorter recovery period. For optimal results, you will need to wear a compression garment over the treated area for two-six weeks following surgery. This will help your skin stay snug to fit your new contour.
HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Patients may be swollen for up to six weeks after surgery. As a result you may initially seem larger in size. However once the swelling diminishes, you will be pleased with your new shape.
In order to keep the weight off permanently, it is essential that you maintain a healthy diet and exercise program. Over time, if you do put on weight after the surgery, it will be gained uniformly as opposed to accumulating in one problem area.
Best of all, you will feel more comfortable in all your clothes—from swim wear to blue jeans—and more confident about your body's contour.
The skin is the largest organ of our body. It protects us from the environment and regulates our body temperature. Skin is made up of millions of cells. Each day thousands of these cells die, fall off, and are replaced by new cells from beneath the outer layer of skin. As we age, this process begins to slow down. Dark blotches and other signs of aging and sun damage begin to appear. Our skin may become dull and begin to form wrinkles.
What do the stars of Hollywood use to keep that youthful glow?
The answer might surprise you. It's not facelifts or laser resurfacing, but a painless, non-invasive lunchtime procedure known as Microdermabrasion. With Microdermabrasion, you can have a treatment and return to work immediately. Microdermabrasion leaves your skin softer, smoother and fresher looking.
Microdermabrasion
If you are unhappy with age spots, acne scars, stretch marks, fine wrinkles or flaking skin, you might want to consider Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion has been used in Europe for years. Now this exciting procedure is the number two non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States. It is helping men and women everywhere experience remarkable improvements in skin texture regardless of skin color. Microdermabrasion treatments combined with our skin care products are a safe, comprehensive approach to skin care.

Is Microdermabrasion safe?
Yes. Microdermabrasion is non-invasive. The procedure only removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells to reveal the fresher, younger cells beneath. Regardless of your skin's condition, fine lines and age spots may be erased and acne scars and stretch marks will become less obvious.
Why choose Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion takes less time than other more invasive procedures. There is no recovery period, no discomfort and you can resume normal activities immediately.
Who are the best candidates for Microdermabrasion?
The best candidates for Microdermabrasion are those patients that:
• cannot afford to take time off for healing from a chemical peel or laser procedure.
• don't want to put off their outdoor activities like golf, tennis or skiing.
• have skin sensitivities to chemicals or make-up.
• have acne-prone skin that has not responded well to other acne remedies.
• are younger and whose skin is showing early signs of aging.
What is the treatment like?
Microdermabrasion treatments are not aggressive; they are slow and progressive, and best of all, they work! Most patients find Microdermabrasion treatments to be quite relaxing. The treatment is like a "superficial skin polishing" using micro-crystals vacuumed through a delicate hand piece. In as little as thirty-five minutes, this gentle, abrasive technique efficiently produces satisfying results. Following the treatment, we may treat your skin with specially formulated creams to further soften and moisturize your skin. Treatments are completed through a course of bi-weekly sessions, ranging from 2 to 12 weeks.
How soon will I see results?
Immediately! After your first treatment your skin will have a fresh pink glow. It will look healthier and feel smoother and softer. Your improvement will continue throughout your treatment program.
Maintaining the results
Maintaining healthy looking skin is a daily task. Always wear SPF of at least 15 to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Keep your skin moist and fresh with daily cleansing and moisturizing using specially formulated skin care products. Our skin care specialist will recommend your skin care products.
We recommend a monthly touch-up treatment to help maintain your results. Ask us about our money saving treatment packages.

Does this sound like you?
I've always been active. Years ago I was unaware of the effects of sun and wind on my skin. Although I don't feel as old as I sometimes look I'm not ready for surgery or a long recovery process, but I'd love to look as young as I feel!
The "weekend" skin peel, the MicroLaserPeel, treats skin conditions associated with aging and an active lifestyle. You can see real improvements in just a few days. Your technician can advise you on how best to protect your skin to maintain the benefits you will see from your MicroLaserPeel, and can answer any question you might have.
Answers to your Questions
What is the MicroLaserPeel?
It is an intra-epidermal laser peel that precisely ablates the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of the condition to be corrected.
Skin conditions such as: wrinkles, scars, acne scars, keratoses, or pigment problems have been very successfully treated with a MicroLaserPeel.
Who Should Consider a MicroLaserPeel?
If you are looking for more than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels, and have little time for a prolonged healing process, then the MicroLaserPeel was designed for you.
How is the MicroLaserPeel different from Microdermabrasion?
Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the stratum corneum (2-4 microns). The MicroLaserPeel is a partial-to-full epidermal peel (20-50 microns) and is performed with topical anesthetic. Because this procedure ablates deeper into the epidermis, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and full skin resurfacing.
How many MicroLaserPeels can be done?
Typically, the procedure is repeated 2-5 times, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, but many peels may be done to achieve the desired result.
What can you expect?
You will experience smoother, healthier, more vibrant skin, with a significant, immediate change in skin texture and tightness as compared to microdermabrasion.
How long is the healing process?
Healing takes 2-5 days. The procedure can be performed on a Thursday or Friday, so you can return to work the following Monday. Symptoms immediately following the procedure resemble a sunburn, with minor sloughing on the second day. Redness will begin to fade by the third day, and be easily covered by makeup on the fourth day.
What should I know about pre- and post-treatment care?
Your technician will provide you with very detailed pre- and post-treatment information.
Get The Look You Want With Facial Implants
Now you can make a lasting difference in your appearance simply and safely with Softform facial implants.
• Smooth noticeable facial wrinkles and frown lines
• Enhance the appearance and shape of your lips by providing a more defined lip border
Keep The Look You Get With SoftForm Facial Implants
In an effort to provide a long-lasting solution for smoothing facial wrinkles and defining the lip border, a team of surgeons and scientists from the University of California, San Francisco developed the SoftForm facial implant. Their goal was to design a treatment that utilizes a safe, permanent material that would be soft, and feel natural, and that could be administered through a simple in-office procedure. The result is the new SoftForm facial implant.
An Implant Material with a 20-year Record of Safety
The SoftForm facial implant is made of a soft, pliable synthetic material called ePTFE. This material has been safely used in more than 3.5 million people in an extensive range of medical and surgical procedures such as vascular grafts.
A Simple In-Office Procedure
Although the length of the procedure can vary with the number of implants used, it generally takes less than one hour. Your doctor will insert the implants below the surface of your skin through two small incisions.
What to Expect
Since each person's experience with the SoftForm facial implant procedure may differ, it's important to talk with your doctor about what you can expect following the treatment.
*Immediately following treatment - results are visible immediately. Swelling, bruising, or some discomfort may occur. Some patients may experience a sensation of tightness at the implantation site.
• Up to 1 week following treatment most swelling and bruising should disappear. Many people will not be able to tell that a procedure has been done. Although you may always be able to feel the implant under your skin, softening of the implant is anticipated over time.
• 3 to 4 months following treatment healing is complete. Continued softening of the implant is anticipated.
Is SoftForm Facial Implant Right For You?
Ask your doctor if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment with the SoftForm facial implant. If you have noticeable facial wrinkles or desire definition of your lip border and want long-lasting results, SoftForm facial implant may be for you. SoftForm facial implant is not an appropriate treatment for fine, superficial lines; to smooth these lines your doctor may recommend another procedure, such as treatment with Restylane injections. As with any surgical procedure, there are associated benefits and risks. Be sure to discuss these with your doctor and review the SoftForm facial implant patient information brochure.
Enhance Your Treatment Results
To further enhance their results, some patients have used the SoftForm facial implant together with other aesthetic procedures such as Restylane implants, face lifts, or facial resurfacing. Talk with your doctor about which treatment options are best suited to you.
Having Second Thoughts About Your Tattoo?
If so, you're not alone. Every day, we see patients from every walk of life that have second thoughts about their tattoos. What once seemed like a good idea just doesn't fit your new image, and you wish it would just go away. Now, we can make your wish come true. Using our advanced laser system, we can remove your tattoo safely without leaving a scar.
How Do Laser and Infrared Treatments Compare To Other Methods Of Tattoo Removal?
Your other treatment options for removing your tattoo include surgical excision, dermabrasion (or sanding) and chemical peels. These methods are more invasive and painful, and can often result in scarring. Laser and infrared tattoo removal are safer. They are non-invasive and only target the ink used in the tattoo process.
How Are Tattoos Removed?
Medical lasers use an intense beam of light to significantly lighten or completely remove your tattoo. Different wavelengths of light treat different colors of ink. When the ink particles of your tattoo absorb the light from the laser, they are broken up into tiny fragments. These fragments are then absorbed through your body's natural cleansing mechanism. This cleansing process generally takes a few weeks. Larger ink particles may require multiple treatments.
Tattoo removal by Infrared Coagulation uses infrared light to reach the skin layer that contains the tattoo's ink. The treated area may blister, depending on the color of the ink.
What Will My Skin Look Like After Treatment?
Right after your treatment, your skin may have a white discoloration, and the area around the tattoo may be reddish and could have some swelling. This is normal and will disappear slowly over time. Maximum treatment results take about 5-6 weeks.
What Are The Treatments Like?
Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin, followed by the feeling of sunburn. Many treatments do not require anesthetics. However, some patients feel more comfortable with a local numbing agent like ice or an anesthetic cream. For others, a local anesthetic injection may be beneficial.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Occasionally, hypopigmentation, or a whitening of the skin, may occur. But, normal skin tone should return within 6 - 12 months following your last treatment session. Since the ink used in tattooing is not regulated, some patients have only partial clearing even after several laser sessions.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments required for maximum improvement depends on the size, location, depth and color of your tattoo. Treatments should be placed 4 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body to remove the maximum amount of tattoo pigment. Treatment sessions usually take from 10 to 30 minutes.
Most patients will see improvement in their tattoos. The improvement can be quite dramatic. However, large or heavily pigmented tattoos applied by a professional tattooist can require several treatments for optimum results.
If you have a tattoo or other skin blemish that you would like removed, call our office to arrange a private laser consultation with our laser consultant nurse, Amy.
Not long ago, a facelift was considered by many to be reserved for movie stars and celebrities. Today, a facelift is not just for the rich and famous. It is one of the most well accepted and most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. Today baby boomers from every walk of life are electing to have a facelift.
WHAT IS THE HOUR LIFT?
Wrinkles, sagging skin, laxity in the jowls and neck begin to appear after years of exposure to the elements, facial expressions and the natural aging process. The Hour Lift, also known as the "S" lift is our version of a mini face lift. By surgically tightening the muscles of the face we achieve an overall lift, tightening loose skin in the jowls, jowl line, cheeks, smile lines and neck.
A facelift alone will not remove forehead wrinkles, crow's feet or bags under your eyes. The Hour Lift can be done in combination with other cosmetic procedures and these areas can be treated at the same time as your facelift. Some of the other procedures that can be done along with the Hour Lift include: brow lift, upper eyelid surgery, cheek and lip enhancement, facial and neck liposuction along with facial resurfacing. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your particular condition, your expectations, and the probable outcome of your various treatment options. You will be shown several before and after photographs of patients having similar conditions, and we will explain the details of your procedure.
THE PROCEDURE
Usually premedication is given to relax the patient. Experienced, skilled cosmetic surgeons at Skin & Vein perform the Hour Lift under local anesthesia, utilizing the revolutionary tumescent technique. This in-office surgery eliminates the risks of general anesthesia. Patients experience minimal discomfort with this anesthetic technique and because there are no hospital fees, the cost of surgery is significantly reduced.
The incision is placed in the natural crease of the facial skin. It begins inside the hairline at the temple area above and forward of the ear and continues in front of the ear around the earlobe. The skin is lifted outward and the surgeon tightens and repositions the underlying muscles and tissues. Excess skin and fat may be removed. The incision is then closed with fine sutures. The entire procedure usually takes about an hour and a half.
THE RECOVERY
You can expect an easy and safe recovery. While healing time varies slightly among patients, the tumescent technique for anesthesia allows for an overall shorter recovery period. 85% of patients experience no bruising after the Hour Lift and most will be able to resume normal activities within three days. Pain is normally minimal and can be controlled with oral medication. Generally you can shampoo and wear make-up the day after surgery.
After your surgery, instead of bandages you will wear an ice containing head garment for 24-48 hours. Your sutures will be removed in six to eight days.
MINIMAL RISKS
With any surgical procedure, there is some risk involved. Fortunately, the potential complications resulting from the Hour Lift are minimal. In rare instances, a patient could experience infection, skin trauma, bleeding or a reaction to the anesthesia or sutures. Risk will be reviewed with each patient prior to surgery.
